Hi. I've had the same problem on a Sony Vaio. I'm a bit of a technophobe so after reading this thread I booted Win XP Pro+SP3 in the cd drive and went to the repair console. At the C:prompt I ran CHKDSK. when it finished I removed the XP disc and reebooted the laptop. I fixed my problem.

I spent several hours trying to fix this problem. Read Don Ho's solution and it worked like a charm. My computer doesn't recognize dvd drive for boot up so changed cable from cd drive and placed in the dvd drive and booted up fine. I followed all of Don Ho's instructions and did not loose any programs. Thank you
Don Ho, great info.

Just solved this hal.dll problem now.Pls insert an XP CD and allow to boot as if you are installing afresh. When it shows u the partition where your Xp is installed, choose the repair option. The setup files are deleted and then reloaded.Your OS will restart and take you back to the installation page,do not panic and allow the installation run, Finish the installation and your PC should be up and running. It worked for me.

I,too, got the "missing or corrupt: <Windows root>system32hal.dll" message when rebooting after running a quick test on SeaTools. Because I don't have the Recovery Console option — I'm using an OEM copy of WinXP Pro w/SP3 — I changed my boot priority to CD-Rom, inserted my OEM install disc and rebooted. I let it load all the executable files and then when it got to the place where you choose a drive to install Windows on, I simply pressed F3 twice to exit, ctrl-alt-delete to reboot, removing my install disk and then changed my boot priority back to Hard Disk. Upon the next reboot, I was able to boot normally to my desktop.

Hi all. I got the same issue, but none of the procedures in the Recovery Console worked. I got a ACCESS DENIED response when I tried to copy the file from my CDROM (WIN XP OS) to hard drive. So, now I am going to install Windows XP Media Center Edition (basically XP Pro) and will take the file and overwrite the old one, then edit my boot.ini (RUN > MSCONFIG is another way in the start menu). Thank you all for giving suggestions, but I guess one solution cannot help everyone.

it looks like i have some sort of boot error / missing HAL file too but i cant seem to get into an msdos prompt to even be able to access the a: drive and my ntfs c drive to copy the hal.dll into the system32 folder.
however, i just saw this article about a way to get in, using a win2000 boot disk, which i still ahve to try (its too late atm :o) but was wondering if anyone has had any luck with this method, or has heard about it?

I had this problem about 4 years ago. I ended up having to reinstall. I had XP Pro though. If you have Home, you can just upgrade to Pro, and that should be the quick fix there. I found a "hack".. Boot up Win XP Pro with a Windows 2000 start up CD. In the Recovery console, you can now copy files from floppy into Windows and vice versa. I placed HAL.DLL back into its folder, but this did not work. it should have, since HAL.DLL is not an encrypted file or anything. Now I know that when you get that message, it could just be that the boot.ini file is misconfigured. In retrospect, I would have checked that as well, and it is quite conceivable that the procedure I performed, may well have worked.

When I follow your seps, when I select the C: for the install, a message reads" Setup cannot install Windows XP on this partition. However, blah blah blah." It wants me to delete the partition that is being selected. Maybe I'm not reading your info correctly. This all happened when I uninstalled several applications through the Add Remove program. What do need to do?

Hi Don, I don\'t know alot about computers so I need to know what the heck this means, I just copied and pasted it from your post and Its all i need to know! Here it is,
Remove the cd and on restart enter the bios and disable the cdrom as a boot option. Exit bios and restart. The computer should start but if it doesn\\\'t put the boot disk back in and then it should start. After it starts you should not have to use the floppy to boot any more. Hal.dll has messed with me one to many times!!!!!! Good Luck - Don Ho
Thanks Don!

Downloading the file provided here didn't solve my problem, but this <a href="http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;330184">Microsoft Knowledgebase article did</a>.
Hope this helps!

Here's How:
1.
Enter Windows XP Recovery Console. The Recovery Console is an advanced diagnostic mode of Windows XP with special tools that will allow you to restore the hal.dll file.
2.
When you reach the command prompt (detailed in Step 6 in the link above), type the following and then press Enter:
expand d:\i386\hal.dl_ c:\windows\system32\hal.dll
In the command listed above, d represents the drive letter assigned to the optical drive that your Windows XP CD is currently in. While this is most often d, your system could assign a different letter. Also, c:\windows represents the drive and folder that Windows XP is currently installed on. Again, this is most often the case but your system could be different.
3.
If you're prompted to overwrite the file, press Y.
4.
Take out the Windows XP CD, type exit and then press Enter to restart your PC.
Assuming that a missing or corrupt hal.dll file was your only issue, Windows XP should now start normally.

I see many people talking of losing all thier data in many situations happen, drop a hal.dll or other and have to abandone old hd. It's my understanding that the cost of retrieveing data is not that bad now and I even saw a program that stated it would recover most data for like $59
. I spoke with a person who does recovery, he said today , they can recover even if it's damaged or even burned! I listened because he did plane crash flight recorders and the like. Maybe just hold on to it till you have the money or decide it really was not that important after all.
good luck

Hey Don Ho-
As you mentioned when I want to install new windows with another name for example windows2,
Windows installation begins but at 25% it stopes and nothing happen but every 10-15 secs my notebook hard-drives sounds like \'tik\' and at last it tells windows cannot repair the windows because your C drive is corrupted, something like that.
Also I followed microsoft help regarding missing hal.dll rsolution but it doesn\\\'t work my computer in the recovery consol cannot enter to the system32 directory properly.
What is your idea?
thx

I read all of these posts, and I relate to many. I tried fixing the boot.ini by typing "bootcfg \rebuild" but it gives me the same message as mentioned in M.Briseno's post. Also, are you able to access all of your files and what-not with Don Ho's method?

Sorry for the bad typing in previous message.
For chkdsk /P please change to chkdsk /R. I think using "P" will work but "R" does work.

I have tryed Don\'s and also the post by Hardik, about bootcfg, neither have worked for me.
Using Don\'s method:
Windows XP disk to boot, then it does the windows setup and asks what you want to do. I choose install, it displays an unknown partition, if i select this it then says it must be formated, Thus i am confused as to where your supposed to rename to \"windows2\". There hasnt been an answer given as to if you choose the reformat, do you have the option at that time to rename and continue as directed in Don\'s post<the lead post>. So it would seem this method does not work for those who see \"Unknown partition\"
<br>
Using Hardik\'s method:
After windows sets up i choose R to repair. At prompt i entered bootcfg \"space\"/rebuild it displays message about wait time at same time it displays Error: which prevents the bootcfg from scanning.
Does anyone have an option for those of us that show Unknown for our partition space and have the Windows XP disk.

one thing you people arent understanding is that most of the time your hal.dll file is perfectly fine but your boot.ini file has been damaged and all you need to do is restore your boot.ini file and it will work like normal
to do this first boot to your windows xp cd and when its done loading all of the files and asks you if you want to install or restore press \'r\' and it will go to a command prompt
from there you type in bootcfg and it will give you some options, type bootcfg /rebuild
and when its done type exit
and the computer will restart but dont forget to remove your cd from the computer after the computer restarts windows should boot as normal
if you have any questions please email me at hpeeze(at)gmail.com

I had the same problem as described in the lead post. Tried the solution with no positive result. I switched out the hard drive and installation went normally with every other item being the same. So it seems like a hard drive issue....not exactly a defect. The drive I used was different brand/size, as I couldn't find an exact replacement to test.

Ive tried all methods in this thread so far & no luck. My windows cd is at my friends 4 hrs away & Im using a Compaq winxp restore cd to get me to the recovery console. I cant make a new windows install on the 1 partition I have, it wont let me, says I need to delete the old one. I cant make a new partition either. This seems to be the best solution http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_haldll_missing.htm but since Im using a restore cd from compaq ( I guess this is why ), its telling me that access is denied when its reading & copying the file to my windows boot or w/e( Im guessing thats what its doing neway ). This method also was working http://www.informationweek.com/LP/showArticle.jhtml;jsessionid=1XLYYA4UTB4NCQSNDLRCKH0CJUNN2JVN?articleID=185301251&pgno=2&queryText= ||||| but it gets to bootcfg & wont complete w/o a chkdsk because of errors. Chkdsk gets 75% done & tells me 1 or more errors on the volume are unrecoverable, so I cant boot config. Some1 told me there is a chkdsk /f that will fix those errors but I enter that & it says parameter is wrong.
Any other methods out there? & do you think having my actual generic windows xp cd, not the bundled Compaq restore cd will help me out? Its on the way now but Ill check back for feedback & updates. Thanks in advance.

Thanks cb_baha glad to hear it's worked for some people. I've worked on a computer since all these posts and the method didn't work. One case was something as simple as calling the computer manufacturer and they said something in the bias was disabled. Once the guy made that correction then he didn't receive the missing hal.dll any more. I think his was a Dell that came with a sofware that made it's own recover set of cd's. Like I said earlier there are different symptoms of the missing hal.dll and one of the other fixes offered here by the other people may be a more suitable method. You know how computers are!

This morning I booted the Dim 8200 in my office and it wouldn't boot as it said the HAL.DLL file is missing "Windows root\system32\hal.dll". After a few hours of research, I learned of a way to repair the install using the Install Disc (R for Recovery Console); however, as soon as I run the Recovery Console, it asks for the Administrator's Password (and it is not "blank"/null and frankly I dont recall ever setting it).
To get around this, I tried to reinstall XP in a second folder: Windows2. I was able to boot but none of my programs worked. I then copied the HAL.DLL file from the new install into to the original Windows\System32 folder and the edited the boot.ini to relink to the original folder. With fingers crossed, I rebooted to have finally come full circle with the same error I had this morning: can't fin Hal.DLL.
Not sure if I should try to go the Repair route (in which case, how do I get around the password block?) or go the second install route and basically rebuild my pc (which I certainly dont want to do). There must be a simplier solution....

I think it will work well and simple for reinstalling the missing hal.dll file.
just open start menu select run and then type" sfc /scannow "
The system will scan for the missing files and then it will ask for the windows xp cd. insert it in to the cd drive. now it will copy the hal.dll file automatically.
my system displayed the missing hal.dll message when i pressed enter key windows started and i used this procedure.
If u r not able to start windows itself then try the other method.
insert ur windows xp setup cd boot from ur cd. When you receive the "Press any key to boot from CD" message, press a key to start your computer from the Windows XP CD-ROM.
When you receive the "Welcome to Setup" message, press R to start the Recovery Console. now type expand j:\i386\hal.dl_ c:\windows\system32\hal.dll Where j: is ur cd drive letter and c: is ur windows installation drive. now restart the system. This may solve the problem

I have the same problem, missing hal.dll. I tried what Don Ho explained but when I get to the part where I choose the partition to install on I choose “c: Partition 2 [UNKNOWN] 73257MB (73257MB Free)”, the next screen says: \"The partition is either too full, damaged, not formatted, or formatted with an incompatible file system. To continue installing Windows, Setup must format this partition c: Partition 2 [UNKNOWN] 73257MB (73257MB Free) on 76294MB Disk 0 at ID 0 on bus ) on atapi [MBR].
Caution: Formatting will delete any files on the partition. Use the UP and DOWN ARROW keys to select the file system you want and then Press ENTER to continue. If you want to select a different partition for Windows XP, press ESC to go back.\" Then the two choices I have are \"Format the partition using the NTFS file system (Quick)\" or \"Format the partition using the NTFS file system.\"
My question is, will this actually start/begin the Formatting immediately or will there be another page of options where I can continue with Don\'s instructions? I really don’t want to loose all my Data on this drive. Is there a service where I can have my data saved and put on a new drive with Windows installed?

I had to restore my computer to factory conditions, because a certain well known computer distributor does not send you the Windows XP disk with the system. They only send it when you have a problem and then it's too late. My question: Is it possible to create a boot diskette and simply put hal.dll on this disk? Then if you encounter this problem you can simply boot from the diskette and copy the file into the system32 directory and restart.

My incidence happened when I used "disk cleanup". I checked
another box aside from the defaults because it looked like just so many "Temporary files" of the type that Windows is never able to delete on it's own.The size of the windows directory had grown to 3 gigs. Then I got the Hal error. Oh,for the days of 98!

I just restarted my computer and I am not geting an error that says the hal.dll is missing or corrupt. If I save the .dll onto a CD and put it into the not working computer will this fix it?

dood - if you went too far and installed windows again then to delete the new windows2 folder you might try inheriting the rights to that windows2 folder and changing the rights to the administrator (groups or user names) of the first windows. To do that go to folder options in the control panel and under the view tab scroll to the bottom and remove the check from use simple file sharing and then select apply. Then find and right click the windows2 folder and select properties and under the security tab allow the administrator of the first windows the ability to do all of the options to the left. Once done you can delete the windows2 folder then you'll need to edit the boot.ini file to make the computer not think the windows2 folder is still there. Like I said it sounds like you went too far and installed windows2 completely. Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong on this. I'm not very good at explaining things and a few years ago I didn't know how to cut a computer on so any help would be welcomed.

You don't install windows again, you just use the installation cd to prepare the disk for a second installation. You have to enter windows2 in the provided space before the cd begins the repair job. It will try to restart and when it does, remove the cd before it has a chance to restart and the installation will not continue. It should say that it has finished performing maintenance on your hard drive and then it will try to restart. It will restart automatically in 15 seconds so remove the cd before it restarts. I have been reading that there are different symptoms - some people can use the repair option in the recovery console and expand hal.dll from a windows cd but I was unable to do that on my computer because the computer couldn't find windows period. Windows was still there and using the cd to do another install found the original windows installation. Somehow the windows cd will re-prepair the disk when you attempt to do another install. I've had this happen to me 3 times and a friend's computer did the same thing each with the same symptoms. It has happened on three different hard drives and each hard drive is still working so I doubt it is a hard drive problem. I'm not sure how the boot works but I think there is a seperate small partition that contains the mbr and I believe it gets seperated somehow from windows. Like I said I don't know how that works but I do know that using the cd as mentioned above fixed mine and saved a whole lot of work. I would suggest using the recovery console first trying to expand hal.dll from a windows cd. If you can't access windows through the recovery console then use the cd to do what I mentioned above. It worked for me.

I found a fix to the missing hal.dll that caused me to reinstall several systems. This time I managed to start the computer without a complete reinstall. All you need is a Windows XP Home or Pro cd. It can be sp1 or sp2. Yes a service pack 1 cd will fix a service pack 2 \"existing\" installation the way we are going to do it here. I can\'t say if a Home Edition cd would work with a Pro installation or vice versa. I haven\'t tried that yet. Anyway you will also need a boot disk. First step would be boot from the Windows XP cd (sp1 or sp2) and follow throught the steps untill you are asked what you want to do - \"Install Windows\" or \"Fix Windows using the Recovery console?\" Choose to install windows again. Follow instruction and when you get to the part that asks \"what partition do you want to install it on\" select the same partition you installed your previous Windows installation on. The basic idea here is you will be installing 2 operating sytems on the same computer and on the same partition. When you do - it will detect the previous installation and ask you how you prefer to install it. You\'ll have 2 choices and they are to install the new files to the existing \"windows\" folder (which will cause you to loose everything) or you can create another folder to install the fresh copy of windows. Don\'t worry we are not going to actually install windows we are just going to tell the computer we are and then we\'ll back out of doing it. As for now don\'t install it to windows but change the name to \"windows2\". Then confirm the procedure!! The cd will start going through the process of loading the drivers again for a full install and when it comes to the point that it says something like - \"Windows has finished performing maintenance on you hard drive\" then it will try to restart. Remove the cd and on restart enter the bios and disable the cdrom as a boot option. Exit bios and restart. The computer should start but if it doesn\'t put the boot disk back in and then it should start. After it starts you should not have to use the floppy to boot any more. Hal.dll has messed with me one to many times!!!!!! Good Luck - Don Ho
